Renegades nearly knock off No. 8 San Jose City
SAN JOSE – Ohlone College was two outs away from pulling its biggest upset of the season. But No. 8 state-ranked San Jose City College rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat the visiting Renegades by a final score of 4-3 on Friday.
Jade Johnson smashed a two-run home run in the top of the first inning to put momentum early on Ohlone's side.
SJCC (29-4, 7-3 CC) got on the board with a run in the second before the Renegades got it back thanks to a two-out Jaguars error.
Ohlone took that 3-1 advantage into the final frame but couldn't hold on for the win. Consecutive one-out singles and a walk loaded the bases before San Jose got a walk-off bases-clearing single from Jayden Vai.
Mahliyah Ortiz-Lucero pitched well despite earning the loss. She allowed 3 earned runs and 6 hits over the complete-game effort.
Carino Docena had a perfect day at the plate, going 3 for 3 with a run to lead Ohlone.
Ohlone has lost three straight but by a combined 10-6 margin. The Renegades battled top-ranked West Valley College on Thursday but fell 3-1. And on Tuesday, Ohlone came out on the losing end of a 3-2 game against Monterey Peninsula College.
The Renegades are now 14-22 overall and 2-9 in Coast Conference play. They are back in action on Tuesday (Apr. 15) to host No. 3 College of San Mateo at 3 p.m.
